ISLAMABAD: National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is considering to reduce prices of electricity for the month of October.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G) has proposed a decrease of Rs1.0159/kWh from the previous reference price of Rs10.275 per kWh. The CPPA-G cited the actual fuel cost for October as Rs9.2593/kWh.
Nepra is scheduled to hold a public hearing on November 26 to review the proposal and gather feedback from stakeholders.
Electricity generation in October came from a range of sources, with hydropower contributing the largest share at 31.06% of the total.
According to Mettis Global, local coal accounted for 14.7% of the generation at a cost of Rs11.18/kWh, while imported coal contributed 8.79% at a higher rate of Rs16.9110/kWh. Re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) made up 19.51% of the energy mix, with a cost of Rs22.6426/kWh.
Nuclear power, one of the cheapest sources of electricity, contributed 14.05% at just Rs1.5122/kWh. Local gas made up 8.05% of generation at Rs14.2504/kWh, while electricity imported from Iran contributed 0.41% at a cost of Rs25.3/kWh.
Although minimal at 0.02%, furnace oil-based electricity was the most expensive, at Rs29.14/kWh.
After accounting for transmission losses and sales to independent power producers (IPPs), the total cost of generation for October stood at Rs9.2593/kWh.
If approved, the proposed adjustment would result in a lower tariff for consumers of ex-Wapda distribution companies.
Nepra has encouraged the public and relevant stakeholders to participate in the hearing and share their views or concerns regarding the proposal.
