KARACHI: Dairy Farmers’ Association of Karachi said that it will increase the milk price after the administration started collecting double taxes on dairy animals.
Earlier in June, the Commissioner of Karachi had notified the increase of Rs 20per litre in the price of milk, after rounds of talks with the Dairy Farmers Association.
The dairy farmers said that the city administration has started collecting double tax on dairy animals. The city administration has increased tax by Rs 100 to Rs 700 per animal in Gadap Town, Super Highway and other areas.
The dairy farmers maintained that Ibrahim Hyderi Town administration is also collecting Rs 400 tax per animal.
The dairy farmers’ spokesperson said that they are unable to pay Rs 1100 entry fee per animal and would be forced to hike prices of milk and other dairy products.
In June last, the price was raised after the Commissioner Karachi and dairy farmers reached an deal according to which, the dairy farmers will sell milk at the official price until end of the current year.
According to a notification issued, the retail price of milk was fixed at Rs 220per litre after an increase of Rs 20per litre. The wholesale and dairy farmer prices of milk have been fixed at Rs 205 and Rs 195per litre respectively.
“The milk sellers will not demand further increase until December 31. The quality of milk from dairy farms to retailers will be maintained,” the agreement read.
