PESHAWAR: At least 229 industrial units have been closed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) due to growing unrest and the lack of government support.
According to reports, a total of 2,563 industrial units were operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Among them, 229 units were shut down. Of them, 177 units were in the KPEZMEC (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Economic Zones Management and Development Company) and 52 units were in the Gadoon Economic Zone.
Presently, 2,010 industrial units remain operational in various industrial zones across the province, with no major factories present in any of these zones.
According to the Department of Industry, 324 industrial units are under construction across different zones in the province, indicating ongoing efforts to boost the sector despite the challenges faced.

Last year on December 13, a Senate panel informed that the industrial sector is dying in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as 850 units have been closed down in the province. The panel of the upper house of the Parliament was told that Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) is harassing the industries and delay the process of net metering for up to eight months.
At least 81 industrial units, including 10 textile mills and five sugar mills, have also been closed over the past five years in Sindh, the Sindh Assembly was informed last year.
