A bill seeking an increase in number of judges of Supreme Court will be presented in National Assembly (NA) today.

The government has decided to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 33.

Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance

On Friday, the coalition government introduced the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance, 2024 (Ordinance No. VIII of 2024) in Senate.

However, the ordinance triggered criticism from the opposition and legal fraternity, with petitions landed in the Supreme Court arguing that it violates Articles 2, 4, 9, and 10 of the Constitution.

Earlier, the government passed 26th amendment to the constitution of Pakistan to revise the appointment procedure of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and fix the tenure of the post to three years.
