Bilawal Bhutto calls out PTI’s double standards on constitutional integrity

WEB DESK: Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the chairman of the PPP, chastised the PTI on Wednesday for allowing “interference from the same people” who its leaders had just “lectured” on the value of preserving the Constitution.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Bhutto-Zardari remarked, “While upholding the Constitution, they do not engage with politicians. Instead, they are compelling the very people — whom the opposition leader Omar Ayub lectured against political interference — to interfere by forcefully grabbing their feet.”

Furthermore, the National Assembly has witnessed frequent protests and heated exchanges between the government and opposition benches in recent days.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif retaliated sharply against PTI’s Ayub, who had suggested that constitutional violators should be tried for treason under Article 6. Ayub responded the next day, calling Asif’s statements “personal” and “unwarranted.”

On the floor of the Lower House, Bhutto-Zardari accused the PTI of double standards. “They claim to fight for the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law, and haqeeqi azadi (real freedom), yet they only want to engage with our armies,” he asserted.

At the start of his speech, Bhutto-Zardari reminded the opposition of their responsibilities, saying, “Even if the opposition might have forgotten its responsibility, it is our (government’s) duty to remind them that if they are members of this House and are receiving salaries, those would be Halal if they fulfil their responsibility.”

He also urged the PTI to fulfil its role in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where it is in power, rather than “crying only about their matters,” causing an uproar from the opposition.

Detailing the PPP’s initiatives, Bhutto-Zardari invited the PTI to visit Sindh’s hospitals to witness how free and quality treatment is provided to the poor. “We are ready to work with your government to ensure free and quality treatment in Peshawar, like the NICVD,” he added.

At one point, Bhutto-Zardari expressed his dismay at the opposition’s “non-serious attitude,” prompting vocal protests from the opposition benches.
