WEB DESK: In a heart-to-heart interview, actress and mama of three Mathira dished on the challenges of raising kids on her own after her split in 2018. She opened up about the pressures, the feels, and the fierce strength she found in her sons during that tough time.
Mathira says her three boys have been her rock, and she’s had to be both mom and dad to them. “When things fall apart with the dad, it falls on the mom to step up and be the strong one,” she said. “It’s not what we’re built for, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, and that can make you stronger than ever.”
Mathira called out society’s double standards for single parents. “Single moms can’t win,” she said. “They do something good, and people wonder who’s helping them behind the scenes. Dads do something good, and they get a pat on the back. But moms? They get judged no matter what they do. It’s impossible to be the perfect mom and dad all at once under that kind of pressure.”
Mathira also talked about her battle with depression after her third pregnancy, a struggle she feels gets ignored, shamed, and dismissed way too often. “At least people are starting to get that depression is real, especially after having a baby,” she said. “We need to talk more about mental health so moms can get the help they need.”
