The winter season is almost here in Pakistan and so is the smog in Lahore.
At present, there is no sign of rain in the city so the Punjab government is making arrangements for artificial rain to reduce the smog in Lahore.
Artificial rain, also known as cloud seeding is what’s known as a weather modification technique. It artificially alters the weather by enhancing the ability of clouds to produce so-called “artificial rain” or snow, which can help meet the precipitation needs of a particular region.
For the first time in Pakistan, artificial rain was used last year to control the pollution that was threatening the city.
How intense is the smog in Lahore?
The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Lahore recently soared to 700 with the visibility dropping to 800 meters due to smog.
The severe AQI is causing respiratory illnesses among the citizens as they are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, eye irritation, and sore throats.
Due to the smog, the life is also highly disturbed as the timings of the schools have been changed.
The schools in the provinical capital will start at 8:45am till 2:45pm on weekdays. However, on Fridays, the student will get free at 1:45pm.
The new timings will remain in effect till Jan 31, 2025.
