Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a larger main camera sensor and a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera on both Pro models. Recent reports from Asia confirm these rumors.

Enhanced Main Camera Sensor

Weibo user OvO Baby Sauce OvO revealed that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will use a custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro will keep the 48-megapixel Sony IMX803 sensor found in the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Ultra Wide Camera Upgrade

Additionally, the leaker suggested a significant upgrade for the Ultra Wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The new 48-megapixel sensor will improve light capture and photo quality, especially in low-light conditions. Currently, the Ultra Wide lens on the iPhone 15 Pro models has a 12-megapixel sensor.

Previous Leaks and Speculations

In January, Weibo user “Digital Chat Station” hinted at similar specifications. This earlier leak described the custom Sony IMX903 in the iPhone 16 Pro Max as having advanced capabilities. These include a stacked design for better performance, a 14-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for superior image data conversion, and Digital Gain Control (DCG) for improved dynamic range and noise management.

Support from Previous Rumors

Last December, Weibo user “Instant Digital” first mentioned the possibility of a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera on both iPhone 16 Pro models. This rumor suggested that the new Pro devices would be the first to feature dual 48-megapixel sensors, enabling the capture of 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in Ultra Wide mode.

Analyst Predictions

Today’s update supports this claim and aligns with a 2023 forecast by Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu. He predicted that the iPhone 16 Pro would come equipped with a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, the iPhone 17 Pro, expected in 2025, will likely complete the transition to 48-megapixel sensors for the rear camera array. This update will extend to the Telephoto lens, which currently has a 12-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 15 Pro models.
