A 85-year-old grandmother from rural Zambia has become a fashion sensation.
Margret Chola is known to the world as “Legendary Glamma” and has more than 50,000 followers on Instagram for her striking and playful fashion photographs.
“I feel different, I feel new and alive in these clothes, in a way that I’ve never felt before,” Chola said.
Most often Chola is photographed in all her glamour outside often sitting on an elegant wooden chair or lounging on a leather sofa.
Backstory
Her story began in 2023 when her granddaughter, Diana Kaumba, a stylist based in New York City, turned a casual idea into a global phenomenon, according to the BBC.
Kaumba, visiting Zambia to mark her father’s death anniversary, asked her grandmother to try on her unworn outfits.
What started as a playful exchange transformed into the Granny Series.
Kaumba describes her grandmother as having “courage, grace, and the ability to nail every look.”
She hopes that this will highlight that older people still have a lot to offer and making memories together is an important way to “leave footprints for the next generation”.
As a result of Mbuya’s photo shoots, Kaumba has been hired by four granddaughters to style their grandmothers – aged between 70 and 96.
