OpenAI has announced plans to remove one of the voices used by ChatGPT after users noted its striking resemblance to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson. This similarity drew parallels to the 2013 film Her, in which Johansson voices an AI assistant.
The comparisons emerged when users experienced the “Sky” voice option during OpenAI’s demonstration of new ChatGPT features.
In response to the feedback, OpenAI clarified that the selection of voices for ChatGPT’s voice mode was a meticulous process. “The voices were carefully chosen through an extensive five-month process involving professional voice actors, talent agencies, casting directors, and industry advisors,” the company explained.
In November, Johansson reportedly took legal action against an AI app that used her likeness without authorisation in an advertisement.
OpenAI emphasised that the resemblance to Johansson was unintended. “Our ‘Sky’ voice is not designed to imitate Scarlett Johansson,” the company stated in a blog post. “We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice.”
