LONDON: Preparations for the funeral of King Charles III are reportedly being updated following his cancer diagnosis last month. The New Zealand Herald reports that arrangements for the funeral have been underway since the day after the late Queen Elizabeth’s burial in 2022.

Aides to King Charles III are continuously reviewing detailed copies of his official funeral plans, known as “Operation Menai Bridge.” The extensive document, spanning several hundred pages, was drafted the day after Queen Elizabeth’s burial on September 8, 2022. According to the Daily Beast, Operation Menai Bridge is being regularly updated in light of King Charles’s declining health.

All members of the monarchy have personalised funeral plans, each named after well-known bridges. The late Queen’s funeral arrangements were referred to as “Operation London Bridge.” An aide stressed to local media that while it’s a serious responsibility, planning for such events is approached pragmatically, with no one anticipating unforeseen circumstances.

King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis in February prompted concerns about his health. However, he was recently observed engaging with well-wishers after attending an Easter service at Windsor Castle. Despite his ongoing treatment, the king has continued to discharge his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with the prime minister. His presence at traditional royal events like the Easter service suggests a gradual return to public life.

Upon ascending the throne after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III faced the challenge of modernising the monarchy to resonate with a diverse population. As he navigates his role, particularly engaging younger generations and minority communities, the palace has been proactive in maintaining his visibility, while also prioritising his health and safety during treatment.
