WEB DESK: The United States will reportedly impose restrictions on the movements of Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during his visit to the United Nations in New York City this week. He will be confined to a limited area around the UN building in Midtown East, with access permitted to the Iranian mission nearby and JFK Airport via a specified route.
These measures come amidst considerations by the US Treasury for sanctions against Iran following its recent missile attack on Israel. Amir-Abdollahian’s arrival is timed to coincide with a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. Tensions have escalated in the region, fueled by his remarks suggesting potential repercussions for Israel’s actions, exacerbating already strained relations.
While the State Department has yet to comment on Amir-Abdollahian’s reported visit, the UN Security Council has a meeting scheduled for Thursday to address “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.” Requests for clarification from the State Department regarding Amir-Abdollahian’s trip remain unanswered.
“I fully expect that we will take additional sanctions action against Iran in the coming days,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said during a press conference Tuesday.
“We don’t preview our sanctions tools. But in discussions I’ve had, all options to disrupt terrorist financing of Iran continue to be on the table,” she added, calling Iran’s actions in the Middle East “malign and destabilizing activity.”
