LAHORE: The electoral victory of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from the NA-130 constituency has faced a challenge before the Lahore High Court (LHC) election tribunal.

According to media reports, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) leader Dr Yasmin Rashid lodged a petition against Nawaz Sharif’s win through her legal representatives, Ahmed Owais and Rana Mudassir. The petition contends that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a notification in breach of the law concerning Nawaz Sharif’s victory.

Initially challenged on February 10, Nawaz Sharif’s success in Lahore’s NA-130 constituency was subject to a petition in the Lahore High Court. However, on February 13, the Lahore High Court dismissed Yasmin Rashid’s plea against Nawaz Sharif’s victory.

LHC Justice Ali Baqar Najafi advised the petitioner, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, to seek recourse with the Election Commission following the hearing of her application. Consequently, on February 14th, the Election Commission released a notification regarding Nawaz Sharif’s win.

In the February 8 elections, Nawaz Sharif secured victory from Lahore’s NA-130 constituency with 179,310 votes, while PTI-backed candidate Yasmin Rashid secured 104,485 votes, securing the second position.

In a separate development, the LHC Election Appellate Tribunal invalidated the victory of PML-N leader Azhar Qayyum from the NA-81 Gujranwala constituency.

Meanwhile, Justice Shahid Kareem of the Lahore High Court Election Appellate Tribunal addressed the plea of Bilal Ajaz Chaudhry, a candidate from the Sunni Ittehad Council, on Tuesday. During the proceedings, representatives Rana Usman Ghani and Sardar Latif Khosa informed the court that Bilal Ajaz Chaudhry initially won with 8,000 votes. However, after a recount, Azhar Qayyum was declared the winner.

Consequently, the court reinstated Bilal Ajaz Chaudhry as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) representing the Sunni Ittehad Council.
