The federal government has decided to cut electricity costs, suggesting a Rs2 per unit reduction in the second quarter of fiscal year 2024-25.

The reform is expected to go into effect in March, saving consumers more than Rs52 billion.

Power distribution companies have submitted requests for quarterly price modifications to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).

The agency will conduct a public hearing on February 12 to discuss the plan.

Low electricity price in summer

If approved, the reduction will be applied to electricity bills for March, April, and May.

Lifeline subscribers will not benefit from the price cut, but K-Electric customers would.

The suggested cut is intended to alleviate customers’ financial burdens in the wake of rising inflation and economic uncertainty.

The administration believes that lower electricity costs will provide temporary relief to consumers and businesses.

Nepra will make the final decision on whether the change is in line with economic and energy policy objectives.

If approved, the raised charges will be implemented in the coming months, affecting millions of energy users across Pakistan.

Earlier, Federal Minister of Energy, Awais Khan Leghari revealed that power sector employees receive Rs6,000 of free electricity monthly.

Talking to the reporters in Islamabad, the Energy Minister stated that the government cannot currently stop free electricity privileges to power division employees due to ongoing legal cases.
