ISLAMABAD: The federal government tabled the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024, in the National Assembly on Monday, aimed to transform Pakistan into a digitally empowered nation.
Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja tabled the bill — aimed to create a digital identity for citizens, to centralise social, economic, and governance data — in the parliament.
The proposed legalisation would provide for the transformation of Pakistan into a digital nation, enabling a digital society, digital economy, and digital governance.
As per the bill, the National Digital Commission (NDC), Strategic Oversight Committee (SOC), and the Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA) will be established.
The National Digital Commission (NDC) will be chaired by the prime minister and consist of federal and provincial leadership and will set the strategic vision and policy framework for the country’s digital transformation.
Among the main functions of the NDC will be to approve the national digital masterplan and its implementation plans, and provide strategic direction and governance to the PDA, which will implement these policies by coordinating and harmonising digital initiatives across all levels of government.
The bill’s objective, as stated by officials, was to improve access to departments managing ID cards, land records, birth certificates, and health records.
