THARPARKAR: A new survey in Tharparkar reveals high levels of stigma and misconceptions about mental health.
The survey was conducted by the Sindh Mental Health Authority (SMHA). It revealed that the majority of people in Tharparkar face barriers to mental health care.
Widespread misconceptions
The survey, called Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) Among the Residents of Tharparkar, included 5,378 people from seven areas. It found that 70 per cent of participants believed mental illnesses were contagious, while 82 per cent said family stigma prevented people from seeking help. Whereas, many people also believe that sins or supernatural forces cause mental illness.

Mental health barriers
The survey also highlighted barriers to getting mental health care. 35 per cent participants cited financial issues as a problem. 16 per cent were unaware of available mental health services, whereas, 76 per cent expressed concerens about privacy when seeking help. However, a mere 36 per cent of people believed recovery from mental illness was possible.
Mental health stigma
Family and community stigma turned out to be the central issue in Tharparkar mental health survey.
65 per cent of people felt ashamed of having a mentally ill relative, whereas, 87 per cent participants said that their communities often look down on people with mental health issues.
The survey shows a clear need for better awareness and support for mental health in Tharparkar.
