CALIFORNIA: Google DeepMind, the company’s AI unit, has launched Gemini 2.0 to power a new era of ‘agentic’ experience. Gemini 2.0 is a next-generation AI model as global tech giants intensify their efforts to lead in the rapidly evolving AI sector.  

This launch marks a significant leap forward in Google’s AI capabilities as Gemini 2.0 boasts enhanced performance, multimodal understanding and the ability to interact with the world in more sophisticated ways.

The first model in the Gemini 2.0 family, “Flash,” is now available as an experimental version for developers. The company said it builds upon the success of its predecessor, Gemini 1.5 Flash, offering improved performance and faster response times.

Gemini 2.0 Flash outperforms even the more advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks while operating at twice the speed, as per the company.

Sundar Pichai, ECO, introduced the new model, which he said heralded “a new agentic era” of AI, with systems capable of understanding, reasoning, and making decisions about the world.

Gemini 2.0 is now rolling out via the Gemini App. Users can interact with the model in a chat-optimized way.

Flash is the first launch of the Gemini 2.0 family and is now available as an experimental version for developers. It builds upon the success of its predecessor, Gemini 1.5 Flash promises improved speed and the use of various kinds of inputs-action, improved performance and faster response time, said the company.

The announcement sent Google’s shares rapidly rising more than 4% on Wall Street, following an earlier surge of 3.5% the previous day after the launch of its groundbreaking quantum chip.

Tech giants, including OpenAI, Meta, and Amazon, have been racing to launch increasingly powerful AI models despite concerns over their cost and economic impact. The latest trend, AI “agents,” involves systems designed to perceive their surroundings, make decisions, and perform tasks, promising to redefine the AI landscape.

Further, Google intends to widen the expanded capabilities of Gemini 2.0 in 2025, with AI Overviews in many countries and languages. Also, being involved in testing a product that interacts with software, websites, and some tools in the kind of a normal human user, and further project enhancements to Project Astra, its image-responsive digital assistant.

Gemini technology has been integrated into 7 of Google’s products, which serve more than 2 billion consumers and attract millions of developers worldwide.
