MUMBAI: Renowned music composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage, Indian media reported on Tuesday.
The couple, who tied the knot in 1995 through an arranged marriage and share three children, released a statement citing significant emotional strain and insurmountable differences as the reasons for the separation.
Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, issued an official statement on her behalf, highlighting the reasons behind their decision. “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman,” the statement added.
“This decision follows significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap that neither party feels able to bridge at this time,” it read.
Rehman’s emphasised that this decision stems from pain and agony. “She requested privacy and understanding from the public as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life,” it read.
The statement underscores the emotional toll of the decision while appealing for respect and privacy for the couple and their family.
