ISLAMABAD: Arshad Khan, also known as ‘Arshad Chai wala’ appeared on the second episode of Shark Tank, and got Rs10 million against his pitch.

What happened on the show

Arshad Khan, the Chaiwala who became famous worldwide from a viral photo in 2016, brought a unique business model idea on Shark Tank Pakistan.

During the pitch, Arshad Khan shared his journey, explaining how his fame from a viral photo in 2016 led him to modelling and acting. Later, he decided to open his own café, which had always been his dream. His first rooftop café was launched in Islamabad in 2020, but due to COVID-19, he faced some challenges. Currently, he has two cafes in Pakistan and is starting to work with a master franchise in the UK.

The judges understood Arshad’s brand and its value, but they raised concerns about certain aspects that any investor would naturally question. One judge pointed out that while “Chaiwala” is a unique brand, others are also using the same name, and there are already several outlets with similar branding.

The judges also questioned the franchise model, particularly the upfront payment of five lakhs and the five percent royalty in Pakistan, asking how it could be justified. There was also concern about focusing on international expansion before building a strong base and financial stability in Pakistan.

Rabeel and Roma offered Arshad one Rs10 million for a 24 per cent equity share, saying they could assist him with marketing and branding. Usman also offered 30 per cent equity, focusing on US expansion and quality control.

Arshad and Kazim chose Rabeel and Roma’s offer, saying that could provide more help with brand expansion.
