The Punjab government has decided to experiment artificial rain project in Rawalpindi amid the deteriorating smog levels across the province.
The trial will proceed only if there is sufficient cloud cover in the area.
With no signs of rain, Lahore recently ranked among the world’s most polluted cities as Air Quality Index (AQI) recently soared to more than 1000. Now the toxic smog is spreading towards South Punjab and Rawalpindi.
Just yesterday, the provincial authorities closed sections of the motorway due to limited visibility from worsening smog conditions.
Earlier, Lahore High Court (LHC) issued strict orders to combat rising smog levels, directing that all vehicles causing excessive pollution be seized.
What is artificial rain?
Artificial rain, also known as cloud seeding is what’s known as a weather modification technique. It artificially alters the weather by enhancing the ability of clouds to produce so-called “artificial rain” or snow, which can help meet the precipitation needs of a particular region.
For the first time in Pakistan, artificial rain was used last year to control the smog that was threatening Lahore.
The severe AQI is causing respiratory illnesses among the citizens as they are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, eye irritation, and sore throats.
Due to the smog, the life is also highly disturbed as the schools are currently closed in Lahore and markets get closed by 8pm.
How can you stay safe from smog?
1- Limit going out
2- Drink extra water
3- Use air purifies in your homes
4- Wear N95 masks
5- When indoors, close windows and other inlets of air
6- Reduce your contribution to pollution by avoiding driving and smokin
Every winter, smog in Lahore gets intense due to global warming but the problem is getting worse with each passing year.
