A significant consultation meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja has concluded. The session focused on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its reserved seats, with legal experts recommending the reinstatement of suspended members on these seats.

The meeting, attended by all members of the Election Commission, relevant officials, and legal advisers, lasted for approximately an hour and a half.

According to sources, the legal team presented a final proposal, emphasising the need for adherence to the Election Act.

The legal experts argued that, following recent amendments, the Supreme Court’s previous ruling on the matter is no longer effective.

During the session, the Secretary of the National Assembly also visited the Election Commission. A decision or notification regarding the PTI’s reserved seats is expected to be issued soon.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court had earlier declared PTI eligible for these reserved seats, which had reduced the government and its allies’ two-thirds majority in the Parliament.

As a response, the government introduced the Election Act Amendment Bill 2024, which both the National Assembly and Senate passed in August.
