The much-anticipated film Emergency, directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, has officially cleared a significant hurdle as it received its censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), moving closer to its theatrical release.

The film, which has generated substantial interest, portrays Ranaut in the role of India’s former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, focusing on the country’s turbulent Emergency period of the 1980s.

Emergency release date

Kangana Ranaut shared the news on social media, expressing gratitude for the support received during the film’s production. “We are glad to announce we have received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency. We will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support,” she tweeted.

With the censor certification secured, the film’s team is gearing up for its official release, with the date expected to be announced shortly. Emergency, written and directed by Ranaut, features a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in key roles.

Emergency cleared with 1-minute cut?

The political drama has finally been cleared for release following a one-minute cut to its original runtime.

The film faced controversy after several Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accused it of misrepresenting the Sikh community and historical inaccuracies. Ranaut had previously criticised the CBFC, alleging that the delay in issuing the certificate was an attempt to stall the release.

The CBFC informed the Bombay High Court last month that Kanagana Ranaut had agreed to the suggested cuts in Emergency, leading to the film’s clearance. Social media posts revealed that the movie’s runtime was reduced from 147 minutes to 146 minutes, indicating minimal cuts were made.

Emergency: India’s darkest political era

The film’s trailer, released in August, offers a glimpse into the dramatic political landscape during the 1980s Emergency, a controversial period in India’s history when civil liberties were suspended.

The historical drama is produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, with music composed by Sanchit Balhara and G.V. Prakash Kumar. Screenplay and dialogues are crafted by Ritesh Shah, adding to the film’s appeal as a gripping political narrative.
