The federal government is preparing to launch an energy-saving initiative centered on replacing traditional ceiling fans with energy-efficient inverter fans. This scheme is designed to address the long-standing issue of high electricity consumption from ceiling fans, which are widely used across the country.
To facilitate this, the government has requested electricity usage data from distribution companies over the last three years. This data will support the implementation of the inverter fan policy, which aims to significantly cut power consumption.

A study conducted during former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tenure found that most fans in Pakistan consume around 100 watts, while inverter fans could save up to 5,000 megawatts annually if widely adopted.
Under the new plan, consumers will be able to apply for inverter fans through the web portals of their respective electricity distribution companies. The cost of the fans will be paid in installments through electricity bills, allowing households to avoid upfront expenses.
The scheme is expected to offer one fan per household initially, with payments spread over a year.
The program is limited to property owners listed on electricity bills, meaning tenants are not eligible. The government hopes this initiative will help reduce electricity demand and ease pressure on the national grid.
