ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that the government will provide electric bikes to top-performing students in government schools.

During a meeting on the use of electric vehicles (EVs), the PM stated that the distribution scheme for these bikes will be modelled after the laptop scheme.

He instructed the development of a comprehensive financial model for electric vehicles, emphasizing that these vehicles would conserve valuable foreign exchange by reducing the need for petrol and diesel imports while also being environmentally friendly.

The Prime Minister also directed consultations with the Ministry of Finance and the State Bank of Pakistan regarding this initiative. He called for improvements in licensing regulations to facilitate the production of electric vehicles in the country.

Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for consultations with all provinces, federal units, and stakeholders to ensure a well-rounded electric vehicle policy.
