Uruguay’s football star Luis Suárez announced his retirement from international football on Monday.
His final match will be a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Montevideo on Friday.
At 37 years old, Suárez, who holds the record as Uruguay’s top scorer with 69 goals in 142 games, shared his emotional decision during a press conference.
“Friday will be my last game for the national team,” Suárez said, visibly moved.
Moreover, he mentioned that winning the 2011 Copa America was the highlight of his career, calling it an irreplaceable achievement.

Suárez began his international career in 2007 and played a crucial role in Uruguay’s journey to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and their Copa America victory in 2011.
In addition, known for his energetic style and occasional controversies, such as the biting incident in the 2014 World Cup and a critical handball in 2010, Suárez is set to retire as one of Uruguay’s most esteemed players.
In 2014, he was honored as England’s Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association and the Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers’ Association.
Furthermore, Suárez’s international career spanned over a decade, during which he participated in nine major tournaments and played for top clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool.
