Google is introducing a new AI-powered feature for Android phones designed to lock users out and prevent hackers from accessing their data in the event of theft. The much-anticipated feature, known as Theft Detection Lock, was first revealed by Google in May as part of the upcoming Android 15 release.
The Theft Detection Lock function uses artificial intelligence (AI) in conjunction with the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to detect unusual movements associated with theft.
When the feature identifies abnormal movement patterns, such as a sharp jolt followed by rapid acceleration, it automatically locks the device’s screen to protect the owner’s sensitive information.

According to ZDNET, the feature is now being rolled out to a limited number of Brazilian users who are part of Google’s beta program. Initially, the AI-powered function will be available on newer Google phones, with plans to extend it to all Android devices running version 10 or later once the feature is fully deployed.
Earlier this year, Google introduced several tools aimed at safeguarding user data “before, during, and after a theft,” further enhancing the security of Android devices.
