Stargazers in Pakistan are in for a rare celestial display on August 19, with a Super Blue Moon set to illuminate the night sky.
This event, where the moon appears larger and brighter due to its proximity to Earth, will be visible globally.
According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the blue moon will occur in Pakistan today at 11:26pm.
Moreover, a Supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth, making it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. This particular Supermoon is unique as it coincides with a Blue Moon, a phenomenon with historical significance.
In addition, the term “Blue Moon” originated in the 19th century when a volcanic eruption caused the full moon to appear blue. Today, it refers to either the third full moon in a season with four full moons or the second full moon in a calendar month. The upcoming moon on August 19 is a Seasonal Blue Moon, an event that won’t recur until 2037.

This marks the beginning of a series of Supermoons from August through November 2024, offering multiple chances for sky watchers to enjoy the moon’s brilliance. On August 19, the moon will be about 226,000 miles from Earth, promising a captivating view for observers across the country.
