At least 91 people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes in Bangladesh on Sunday as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands of protesters.
The death toll, which includes at least 13 policemen, was the highest for a single day from any protests in Bangladesh’s recent history.
The authorities have also blocked internet access and imposed a curfew.

The demonstrators are demanding PM Sheikh Hasina’s resignation after earlier protests in July that began with students calling for an end to a quota system for government jobs and escalated into violence that killed 200 people.
Protesters called for “noncooperation”, urging people not to pay taxes and utility bills and not show up for work on Sunday, a working day in Bangladesh.
Once a widely celebrated figure in South Asia, Hasina has come under fire for allegedly employing excessive force against protesters. Despite these serious accusations, she and her ministers have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
