The Japan government has launched an electronic visa (e-visa) system for short-term tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.
This new system, effective from July 23, aims to streamline the visa application process for eligible foreign nationals from various countries.
The e-visa system is available to applicants from Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Applicants can submit their visa requests online through the Japan e-Visa platform, though the e-visas are restricted to those traveling by plane with an ordinary passport.
“During the application process, applicants may be required to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over their place of residence for an interview,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

E-visas issued under this new system allow for a single entry for tourism purposes, with a maximum stay of 90 days. However, specific limitations apply to certain nationalities: Chinese nationals residing in China can receive visas valid for 15 or 30 days, while Vietnamese nationals living in Vietnam can obtain e-visas for stays of up to 15 days.
Travelers with an electronic visa must present a “visa issuance notice” at the airport, which can be accessed online. It is important to note that PDF files, screenshots, and printed copies will not be accepted.
Japan has witnessed a substantial increase in tourism, issuing 4.1 million visas in 2023. This figure represents a threefold increase from the previous year, with 58 percent (2.4 million) of these visas issued to Chinese nationals.
