LAHORE: Amal Sikhera, a 3-year-old girl, has taken the matter of air pollution to the Lahore High Court, seeking action to address the ongoing issue.
Amal filed a petition in court through her lawyer, Barrister Ali Zafar, urging the authorities to take immediate steps to control the harmful air pollution affecting the city.
Justice Javad Hassan has issued notices to the Secretary of Environment and other relevant authorities, asking them to respond to the petition. Despite government efforts, smog remains a significant problem in Lahore.
Amal highlighted that she was filing the case not only for her own well-being but also for her friends, classmates, and future generations. She pointed out that young children and the elderly are severely impacted by the pollution.
In her petition, she also noted a dangerous increase in Punjab’s Air Quality Index (AQI), emphasizing that under Article 99-A, the government is obligated to provide citizens with a clean and healthy environment. She requested the court to order the Punjab government to take action against vehicles emitting excessive smoke, contributing to the pollution.
