The Ministry of Education has unveiled alarming statistics during a session of the National Assembly, revealing that around 26.2 million children in the country are currently out of school. This data highlights a significant educational crisis across various age groups.

Among children aged 5 to 9, approximately 10.7 million are not attending school, with 4.97 million boys and 5.8 million girls missing out on primary education. In the 10 to 12 age group, 4.93 million children are not enrolled in middle school, including 2.1 million boys and 2.82 million girls.

At the high school level, 4.54 million students are not attending, comprising 2.3 million boys and 2.23 million girls. Furthermore, 5.95 million students are deprived of higher secondary education, with 2.99 million boys and 2.95 million girls out of school.

In response to the disturbing figures, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a national education emergency on Sunday. He urged the private sector and civil society organisations to work alongside the government in addressing the growing education crisis.

A UNESCO report indicates that three out of four children in developing nations cannot read or comprehend a simple text by the age of 10. Moreover, 754 million adults worldwide remain illiterate, with women accounting for two-thirds of this population.
